The Periphery Center is a living culture lab: a practice focused on building community through the creative exploration of technology, space and ritual as our cultural medium.
Located at the PERIPHERY.
Operating in cycles.
Nine phases. Inhale and exhale. Internal and public. The work moves through the space and the community moves through the work.
Inhale / Internal
The cohort comes together. Meets the guides. Introduced to the palette. Preps for the share.
Exhale / Public
The cohort shares the palette. The community shares experience. The provocation + cycle are celebrated.
Inhale / Internal
Tinker with the palette. Develop first sketches. Safe space for play and failure.
Exhale / Public
Open floor. The Sketches evolve in real-time with the community present. The community learns a new medium.
Inhale / Internal
Internal preparation. The best material is isolated and hardened for presentation.
Peak
The studies are showcased. The community celebrates. All senses are activated. The provocation is real.
Inhale / Internal
Post-event clarity. The Select is chosen from the full body of studies.
Exhale / Public
A Select drops into the neighborhood. Physical, permanent, present.
Sense / External
A regular gathering for discussion around the select. The next cycle begins accumulating.
Every cycle produces three tiers of output. Each tier is harder, refined and more permanent than the last.
Raw, generative output produced during the Tinker phase. No polish. No hierarchy. Everything is valid. Volume over refinement. Play!
Selected from the Sketches. The Studies have survived at least one Exchange. They carry community inspiration. Iterating toward form.
A hardened work. Post-Showcase, post-Synthesize. These are the pieces that survive and enter the neighborhood with some permanence. Fewer. Heavier. Real.
The beliefs that shape the practice. Not rules — orientations. The manifesto is read by doing.
The Digital Trap
Social media, digital gaming, and other forms of digital engagement have limited much of our cultural medium to a digital world.
Breaking the Digital 4th Wall
Physical AI, robotics, theater tech, media architecture, and other developments in physical technology combined with a screen-fatigued society looking for embodied belonging creates a catalyst for shifting how we shape and engage with technology.
An Upswell
There is an upswell of people, research and investment around bringing our spaces to life in new ways using technology.
The Hub
The Periphery Center's mission is to be a hub for the different groups involved in the development and creative exploration of our living cultural medium. Discover The Community near you
Senses + Physics
All technology explored must engage the body and the spaces we inhabit. We build for the physical world, enhancing human experiences.
The Everyday & the Elevated
Experiences must connect everyday communal practice with high artistic achievement, without a rigid wall separating them.
Cultivate and Circulate
Our output must physically pull people together, with borders so porous that stepping into the collective is effortless.
Think with your Hands
We prioritize rapid proofs of concept and embrace a comfort with failure. We build it, test it on the floor, and see what breaks.
Rhythm Over Rules
Innovation thrives on rituals: humanized, structured time. The daily, weekly, and monthly happenings provide the heartbeat needed to sustain the community.
Lived, Not Lectured
Understanding emerges through a community's active relationship with the medium — not through observation alone.
Exchange Over Extraction
We distribute value through shared creation and non-consumption-based models, ensuring the creative act belongs to the community.
Low Floor, No Ceiling
What we build must be intuitive enough for a stranger to grasp instantly, yet deep enough for a dedicated artist to achieve true virtuosity.
Temporal, not Fixed
We acknowledge the human relationship with time — experiences that unfold, shift states, and naturally evolve, rather than trapping people in a perpetual loop.
Watch. Join. Make.
Enabling people to move fluidly between observing, participating, and creating. The roles are not locked.
